About Spiritual Coaching
Does any of the following apply to you?
You consider yourself religious but your experience of reality is making it hard to hold onto your religious beliefs.
You’ve been through something that has led you to question or re-evaluate some or all of your religious beliefs.
You consider yourself religious but you don’t feel that religion is allowing you to express yourself freely or authentically.
You see yourself as being religious but you don’t feel that religion is serving you anymore.
You would like to shift from being religious to being spiritual but you’re finding that deeply held religious beliefs are making that hard.
If any of this resonates, take heart. Despite what some may say, it’s totally fine to question or re-evaluate your religious beliefs. And it’s totally fine to let go of beliefs that are no longer serving you.
It’s important that the spirituality you’re practicing feels authentic to you. Your spiritual beliefs should help you be the best possible version of yourself, connected to both your true self and your Higher Power. If you find that your beliefs aren’t allowing you to do that, you should definitely consider letting them go.
I know from firsthand experience that religious beliefs can be especially hard to release, though. But if you really feel that religion isn’t serving you or allowing you to be authentic or feel free, you might be ready to transition from being religious to being spiritual. And spiritual coaching can help with that transition.
My Story
In 2017, I went through the roughest spiritual crisis of my life. Before then, I was deeply religious and had felt solid in my spiritual beliefs. But after entering and then quickly leaving an extremely conservative church, my spiritual world was turned upside down.
It required extraordinary effort on my part to find my spiritual bearings again. And even though I still consider myself to be on a spiritual journey, I was able to pull myself out of the worst of that crisis.
I now understand that what happened then was I went through a spiritual awakening. I consider it to have been a rude awakening, though, because I was very unprepared for it. But what it ultimately did was help me start practicing a form of spirituality that’s more authentic to me. And it led me to shift from being religious to being spiritual.
For me, this essentially means that I still believe in a Higher Power, but I no longer perform religious rituals or feel like they’re necessary to please or appease that Power. I feel like just being me is enough.
What Causes a Spiritual Crisis?
Anything can cause someone to experience a spiritual crisis. All it takes is something that shatters your worldview or the way you were taught to understand religion, religious texts, or your relationship to your Higher Power.
But, again, even if your spiritual crisis leads you to believe that you would like to be spiritual instead of religious, I know how difficult the transition can be—especially if your beliefs run deep or if your religion is strongly tied to your identity. That’s why, if this is something you’re struggling with, I would like to help you as a spiritual coach.
How Can Spiritual Coaching Help?
If you’re dealing with a spiritual crisis of any kind, spiritual coaching can help you gain clarity on what the root of the crisis is so you can focus on resolving the real issue. It can also help you sort through the spiritual questions you’re now wrestling with and help you navigate any changes you need to make as you uncover your authentic spirituality.
In addition, it can provide you with an objective perspective on your situation. Since spirituality tends to be so closely tied to who we are, it can be hard for us to view our spiritual crisis objectively, which can make it hard to find a way forward. But a spiritual coach can provide an objective perspective so that a way forward becomes clearer.
My Method
I’m not the kind of spiritual coach who will encourage you to perform unfamiliar rituals or anything like that. My method is much simpler. As I learn more about what you’re going through, I will encourage you to do introspection through journaling and related exercises.
I find that, when you experience a spiritual crisis, what’s really happening is that your true self is fighting for expression. After years of holding onto beliefs that weren’t yours to begin with, your true self has had enough and is trying to shed those beliefs so that you can live more authentically.
To understand what your true self is trying to say, I’ll provide journaling prompts tailored to you so that you can hear it more clearly. I may also suggest you read certain books that were instrumental in helping me get through my spiritual crisis.
I truly believe that you already have the clarity you need. You just need to know how to access it.
More specifically, as your spiritual coach, I will…
Help you get to the root of your spiritual crisis so you can address the real issue and start resolving things faster,
Help you sort through which of your beliefs are yours and which aren’t so you can begin practicing a form of spirituality that feels authentic to you,
Provide an objective perspective on your situation to help you gain clarity on how to move forward,
Be a nonjudgmental sounding board for new ideas you’re playing with when it comes to spirituality, and
Provide journal prompts and other resources as needed to help you move forward on your spiritual journey.
And just so you know, my job as your coach is not to change your spiritual beliefs or steer you toward any particular ones. I have a nonjudgmental approach to spiritual coaching.
My job is to listen to what you have to share and then help you determine the best course of action for you. Any advice I give will be based on what you’ve uncovered through the introspection I’ll encourage you to do and our coaching sessions.
